Postal Service Food Drive Makes a Big Impact on Hingham Food Pantry

May 16, 2025 By Tom Hoffman

Last Saturday, the Hingham Post Office participated in the National Letter Cariers Annual Food Drive and is was another great success.

For those that donated, are you wondering how your donations get to the food pantry?

It takes several steps as May is a busy month at The Second Parish Church on Main Street where the Hingham Interfaith Food Pantry is located. During May, the church holds its annual art show, so the donations can’t be brought there until the end of May.

Not to worry, Hingham HS Football and Hingham Little League team up to handle the situation. The Hingham Little League Board graciously allows the food pantry the use of the big room at the Lynch Field House on Beal Street for the sorting and storage of the food donations.

The manpower was supplied by eight members of the Hingham HS Football team who met late Saturday afternoon to load 150 milk crates and 50 banana boxes onto a 20 foot U Haul truck.  The truck then arrived at the field house where the players set up the big room to receive the donations.

The players then followed the truck to the post office at 6 p.m. when the final mail trucks showed up with donations aboard. The players loaded the donations, filling the large truck and it was back to the field house for the unloading. During the week volunteers sorted all the donations by category. The players will return at the end of the month to haul the sorted donations to the food pantry to support members of our community.

Not only do these young men make an impact on the football field but they do as well in the Hingham community!
