Lots of fun in this Fundraiser! On November 2nd, the HHS Crew team and their families sponsored the Crew Challenge Carnival. The HHS Track field was alive with a bouncy house, relay running races, games, caricatures, face painting and BBQ fresh off the grill. Mass MVMNT of Hingham was on hand donating time and equipment and delivering a unique physical challenge. Athletes taught attendants how to erg (stationary rowing machine) and erg relays races were conducted throughout the day. The main event was a 3-way erg relay race squaring off Hingham Police, Hingham Firefighters and HHS Crew (coaches and a few brave dads). As the enthusiastic crowd cheered on the teams, HHS took first and the Firefighters beat out the Police by a few strokes! The carnival was a true community event!
Of the funds raised, 10% will go to the Allison Clarke Scholarship Fund in memory of the beloved middle school teacher. The remainder goes to the crew program to cover its many costs. This fall, over 100 boys and girls participated in the HHS crew program. The program offers a unique experience, as athletes push themselves to meet the demands of this grueling sport. A major challenge the rowing program faces is funding. The school district generously provides bus transportation to and from each regatta, but the remainder of costs are covered by parents and fundraising efforts such as the Crew Challenge Carnival. Money raised covers uniforms, coaching salaries, equipment, boat repair (both shells and motorized safety boats), transporting of boats, insurance and so on.
