Way Back Wednesday: Old Ship Parish House In 1944

Old Ship Parish House in 1944

Trying to inspire faith during WWII, “Our Example is Worth a Thousand Arguments” read the sign in 1944 on the Old Ship First Parish House that was built in 1690. In 1977 it was bought by the Hingham Co-operative Bank (now defunct) and torn down to provide space for a drive thru
window. At the time over 800 people signed a petition to prevent the demolition of the building. When no one stepped forward to purchase the building for a dollar and move it, the bank continued with its plans.

Today it is the location of the drive thru window for the Hingham Institution for Savings in downtown Hingham. The Photograph is from a private collection.
