South Shore Hospital, part of South Shore Health, has been verified as a Level II Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). The achievement recognizes South Shore Hospital’s dedication to providing optimal care for injured patients.
This is the fourth consecutive verification for South Shore Hospital. As a Level II Trauma Center, the hospital is equipped to handle all critical injuries, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
“Verification from the ACS is a ‘seal of approval’ that shows South Shore Hospital is ready, capable, and committed to quick, efficient, life-saving care to patients who are critically injured,” said Christopher Burns, MD, Critical Care Surgery at South Shore Hospital. “When it comes to trauma care, time is of the essence. South Shore Hospital is always ready to respond.”
Trauma Center Verification is an evaluation process done by the ACS to evaluate and improve trauma care. While the ACS does not designate the level of a trauma center, it does verify each trauma center on commitment, readiness, resources, policies, patient care, and performance improvement. The verification award lasts three years.
As a Level II Trauma Center, South Shore Hospital is able to initiate definitive care for all injured patients, including:
- 24-hour immediate coverage by board-certified trauma surgeons, emergency medicine and critical care physicians, as well as trauma-trained RNs, anesthesiologists, respiratory therapists, CT technicians and more.
- Specialists in neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery/orthopedic trauma surgery and more.
- A trauma team that immediately responds to critical injuries entering the Emergency Department.
- Trauma prevention and continuing education programs for staff, as well as a comprehensive quality assessment program.
