Flanagan, Paul James, of Hingham and Sunrise Cohasset, formerly of Dorchester and South Boston, died peacefully on Friday, February 26, 2021 at the South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. He was 94.

Born in Boston on May 24, 1926, he was the son of the late Thomas and Catherine (Kenney) Flanagan and attended local schools. Paul graduated from South Boston High School with the Class of 1944. After high school, Paul enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served his country during WWII. He was honorably discharged on February 23, 1946. Following his time in the service, he briefly worked as a streetcar operator and then later joined the Boston Police Department, rising to the rank of Detective. He enjoyed his work and serving his community, especially planning events such as the Boston Marathon, the visit of Pope John Paul, the Bicentennial visit of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip, and the Tall Ships parade celebration  After retirement from the force he went on to be Director of Security for the Prudential Center. In his spare time, Paul enjoyed taking care of his home, painting, wallpapering, traveling and spending time with his family.

Paul was a friendly, outgoing and hardworking man. His life lessons and example are part of his legacy that continue through his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Paul will be missed by all the lives he touched.

Paul was the beloved husband of Lorraine C. (McLeod) Flanagan, with whom he shared nearly 70 loving years of marriage. He was the devoted father of Paul F. Flanagan of Hingham, Catherine M. Gorman and her spouse Kenneth of NC and James L. Flanagan and his spouse Paula of Hingham. Paul was the loving grandfather of six, the loving great grandfather of three and is also survived by nieces and nephews. Paul was preceded in death by his siblings Mary McLeod and Margaret Shine.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Wednesday, March 3, 2021 from 9-11 AM in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM.

His Funeral Service will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 3, 2021 at 11 AM in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, Hingham. Services will conclude with interment and military honors in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne at 1:15 PM.
