The select board approved an additional Hingham bus stop, at West Corner, this week related to the MBTA Route 714 Bus Stop Safety and Accessibility Project.

This improvement is part of a one-year service pilot program to expand service on the 714 bus route, paid for with $1.5 million in federal Transit Transformation Program funding and MBTA investment.

This addition will strengthen connections to the Hull ferry, Route 220 bus service in Hingham, and introduce a new connection to the commuter rail at Nantasket Junction, thereby enhancing system connectivity and providing more service to Hingham’s Station Street bus stop.

Bus route 714 currently provides service from Station Street in downtown Hingham to Pemberton Point in Hull — with connections to route 220 bus service from Station Street to Quincy Center; the ferry to Long Wharf in Boston; and the Nantasket Junction commuter rail station to Boston’s South Station or the Greenbush line.

At the MBTA’s request, the new stop will be located at Hull and Rockland streets at no cost to the town and will meet accessibility standards.

“It’s worth noting that the new southbound bus 714 stop is in Hingham, while the northbound stop across the street lies in Cohasset,” Assistant Town Administrator for Operations Art Robert told the Hingham Anchor in response to a follow-up email.

This bus stop is one of several 714 bus improvements recently implemented by the MBTA.

“Benefits include increased frequency, with service roughly every 30 minutes, seven days a week,” Roberts said. “Service will be supported with fixed stops, eliminating flagged stop service, where riders can flag a bus at any point along the route.”

The fixed bus stops will be installed in phases. Sections of route with fixed stops still to be constructed will remain flag stops. The process involves public outreach.
