Hingham resident Stephen A. License, 60, 3 Fisher Road, was arrested on several charges the day after he allegedly shot at a man following a road rage incident in which the vehicles involved pulled into the Hingham Public Library parking lot, according to a Hingham Police Department press release issued this afternoon. No one was struck by the gunshots.
License is charged with assault to murder; assault and battery attempt with a firearm (2 charges); assault with a dangerous weapon (firearm); discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building; and disorderly conduct.
License was arrested by Hingham detectives in South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, where he is currently being treated for an apparent non-threatening injury he sustained during the incident. He was not shot. He is expected to be arraigned today (July 24) in the hospital.
The incident occurred Thursday, July 23, at 4:22 p.m. when officers responded to the Hingham Public Library parking lot at 66 Leavitt St. for reports of gunshots fired after an apparent road rage incident between the people in two vehicles, a car and a truck. The truck drove away before officers arrived. The car remained on the scene, according to police reports.
“Officers found the male passenger in the car fired his gun in the library parking lot during the incident. He suffered an apparent non-gunshot injury and was transported to the hospital,” according to the press release.
The gun was recovered at the scene. License has a license to carry a firearm. The female driver of the car was not injured. The driver of the truck, who was not injured, later contacted police.
The incident began several miles away from the scene of the shooting when the driver of the car allegedly threw a napkin out the window.
The truck driver followed the car until they both pulled off the road into the library parking lot. “The female car driver and male truck driver each stepped out and approached each other and had a heated verbal argument,” according to police reports. “The passenger in the car fired two shots from inside the car. Those shots were allegedly fired as the driver was walking back to his truck.”
