An incident of apparent road rage at about 4:22 p.m. Thursday during which one person fired shots at another driver in the Hingham Public Library parking lot resulted in the shooter sustaining a non-life threatening injury, but he was not shot, according to a Hingham Police Department press release. The other driver left before Hingham police officers arrived at 66 Leavitt St.in response to reports of gunshots. The victim was transported to the hospital.
“We are not looking for any armed suspects, and this area and the library are safe,” according to the Hingham Police immediately following the incident. “One person is injured. More to follow. Active investigation.”
Select board member William Ramsey posted the HPD message on Hingham Hub Facebook early this evening, noting that he had just spoken to the police chief: “The scene is secured with the involved parties identified. The investigation is ongoing. There is no threat to the public.”
The preliminary investigation shows that a passenger in the vehicle that remained at the scene “fired his gun in the library parking lot during the incident,” according to the press release. “. . . The gun was recovered at the scene. [The shooter] has a license to carry a firearm.”
The incident remains under investigation. Updates will be posted on the Hingham Anchor as they become available.
