The Hingham High School Crew team is sending its top rowers and coxswains to compete in the annual Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston on October 22. Three HHS boats will race in the following events this Sunday:

  • Men’s Youth Fours (Event 49) at 8:22 a.m.
  • Men’s Youth Eights  (Event 52) at 9:37 a.m.
  • Women’s Youth Eights (Event 58) at 12:03 pm

Ideal viewing spots at Head of the Charles are FALS Bar near the finish line, the iconic Eliot Bridge, and Reunion Village (more details can be found at https://hocr.org). All the races will also be available via live webcast: https://www.hocr.org/the-regatta/livestreams/.

Viewers can recognize Hingham by the solid red oars and red and white uniforms.

The HHS Crew team typically sends a few boats each year to compete in the Head of the Charles. For 2023, 23 Hingham students will be racing—in girls 8+, boys 8+, and boys 4+ boats.

In the Men’s Youth Fours race at 8:22 a.m., Jack Levy will cox Jack Burns in stroke seat, Kyle Strauss, Will Cassidy, and Cullen Moriarty in bow.

Next, at 9:37 a.m. in Men’s Youth Eights, representing Hingham are Sam Ackerman in stroke seat, followed by James Feeley, Walker Bogen, Dylan Drew, Alex Doggett, Will Barry, Josh Bradshaw, and Slater Fairfield in bow, with coxswain Torbjorn Tennebo.

In the Women’s Youth Eights event at 12:03 p.m., the HHS crew includes coxswain Alexa Fox, Maeve Schnorr in stroke, Maisie Knies, Sophie Kerr, Isabelle Wagner, Ava Sugrue, Lynnayah Ryan, Marissa Matthews, and in bow Lydia D’Arcy.

HHS boats that finish in the top half of the race will secure a spot for Hingham in the same event for the 2024 Head of the Charles. All other entries are selected via lottery.

The Head of the Charles is the world’s largest two-day rowing event, drawing crew teams from around the world. Eleven thousand athletes compete each year in the regatta, with 400,000 spectators cheering on from along the banks of the Charles River. In this particularly challenging race, crews row three miles upstream, navigating under seven bridges and all the curves of the Charles River.
