The Hingham girls soccer team is making headlines all over the pitch this season.

University of Connecticut commit Taylor Bello took the spotlight recently, notching impressive career marks of 50 goals and 100 points.

But that only tells half the story. Just as impressive has been the work by a brick wall of a defense at the other end of the field, led by a pair of goalkeepers, junior Caroline MacDonald and sophomore Paige Jones.

Senior Maeve Maroney drives the ball down the field.

Coming out of Tuesday’s 4-0 win at Plymouth North, the Harborwomen had an impressive record of 12-1 and were fourth in the MIAA’s latest Division 2 Power Rankings.

In those 13 games, the defensive crew of MacDonald, Jones, senior captain Hannah Lasch, senior Chloe Mankes, sophomore Corinne Granoff, and sophomore Niamh O’Brien have allowed just four goals while posting 11 shutouts.

The leader of the group is Lasch, who will return to the lineup soon from a short-term injury. A member of Hingham’s 2025 state championship girls hockey team, head coach April Tremante said Lasch brings the same intensity to the field as she does on the ice.

“Hannah has an incredible knack of playing the ball in the air,” said Tremante about Lasch, who will continue playing soccer at the College of the Holy Cross. “She’s not especially tall, but she’s absolutely fearless when going after those balls. Hannah’s the player that sets the bar for her teammates.”

Despite the overall youth of the defensive back line, the unit competes with the skill and poise of grizzled veterans.

“The girls on defense play a very high level of soccer, both here at Hingham as well as with their club teams, which allows them to play as well as they do. They’re smart, disciplined, and they don’t try to force things on the field,” explained Tremante. “They always play composed and confident because of their experience in high-level soccer games.”

Corinne Granoff (23) and senior captain Maggie Flynn head back up the field.

Hingham has only allowed goals this season against Duxbury, in a 3-1 loss, and Silver Lake, in a victory by the same score. Granoff said the foundation of Hingham’s success is built on communication and cooperation.

“We’re connected, we pass well, and we are super calm on the ball,” said the center back. “We do a lot of things away from the field together as a team, and I think that’s created a really cool bond between all of us.”

O’Brien said sticking with a defensive mark and thinking one or two steps ahead of the action are two things the group does well.

“We’re all fast and strong with our feet, and we have the confidence to go after the ball,” she explained.

MacDonald and Jones have had the best view of the action this season in the net for Hingham. They’ve benefited from the incredible defense in front of them, but if an opponent should break through the wall, both are confident they can make the big save.

“We trust in each other and have confidence that we are all going to make the right play,” said Jones.

Added MacDonald, “The thing I notice when I’m in goal is that everyone knows their assignment. There are never players running around the net not being defended.”
