Way Back Wednesday: Benjamin Jone’s House

April 30, 2025 by Geri Duff

On April 19, 1676,families sheltered in the Garrison houses across town as King Philip’s War Party moved through Hingham, killing one man and burning five houses down. In 1668, Joseph Jones built a home above the Weir River. It is said Joseph, his wife Patience, and their eight children hid in the rock outcroppings at Triphammer Pond as the house was one of those burned that night. Years later, grandson Benjamin built this home in the same spot at 38 Jones Street in 1791 where it stands today. This photo is from the Hingham Historical Society.
