There is a series of postcards of Hingham places of interest that were published by Thompson & Thompson of Boston and W. E. Woodside of Hingham. The cards were bordered in gray, printed in Germany, and cost 1 cent to mail (domestic). This dates the postcards to between 1887 and 1917. In a program from the dedication of the Hingham Armory, in 1910, this photo of the building was attributed to photographer W. E. Woodside of South Street. The dates and the lack of landscaping make this one of the oldest published photos of this building. The Hingham Armory was the first building of its kind to be built by the State for Massachusetts Volunteer Militia Company K. Today it is the home of the 1058th Transportation Company of the National Guard.
Hi, Geri,
You don’t show the back, but this design matches a postcard I have which was published by W E Woodside and printed in Germany; one cent domestic and two cents foreign postage. German postcards date from 1907 to ca 1916 (the outbreak of WWI). Woodside was living in Lowell in 1900; by 1905 he was in Hingham. So 1910 fits. Mine is of The Old Ordinary. E Miller
