The exhibit features historically accurate pen-and-ink renderings documenting Henry David Thoreau’s 19th century locale. One of America’s most notable literary figures, Thoreau’s environs influenced in his written works; writings which, in turn, influenced the entire world.

John Roman is a regular contributor to Artists Magazine and has written for several other national art publications. Roman’s essays on Thoreau have appeared in Electrum Magazine (2021), The Bungalore Review (2019) and The Concord Saunterer (2007). A graduate of Suffolk University’s New England School of Art; Design, John has been teaching at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston since 1993. The Library’s Clemens Gallery currently features Marianne Buckley Curran’s exhibit Life by the Sea. The exhibit will be on display through June 1.

Marianne says: “These past years I have dedicated myself to the development of my personal artistic voice. The creative process, which has given substance to my voice, is not only fed and stimulated visually but also through my additional senses of smell, hearing, taste and touch. Having the benefit of a seaside location, I can witness first hand the coolness of an ocean breeze, the taste of the salt air, the fine spray upon my face, the crash of the tide upon the bank and the vision of the sun dancing off the surface water. It is this example of assimilation that combines with individual uniqueness to create my art.

“Most of my work is created on site, using real life models, props and nature. Some paintings will be brought back to my studio to finish using both my drawings and reference photos as guides. I work in watercolors, oils and acrylics, depending on what the subject calls for. At times, one medium will support the creation of the same subject in another medium, for example an on-site watercolor sketch later used as reference for an oil painting.”
