Students no longer required to wear face masks outdoors

May 17, 2021 by Carol Britton Meyer

Gov. Charlie Baker had some good news for students today -- effective tomorrow, May 18 -- on top of his announcement that all restrictions on Massachusetts businesses and industries will be lifted effective May 29.

According to the Department of Elementary & Secondary Education, after consulting with the MA COVID Command Center’s Medical Advisory Board, the governor determined that given the low rate of outdoor transmission of COVID-19, students are no longer required to wear masks when outside, even if social distancing cannot be maintained.

This guidance update applies to recess, physical education, youth sports, and outdoor learning environments. Adults must continue to wear masks outdoors if physical distancing cannot be maintained. Students and adults must continue to wear face masks when inside.
