Following Thursday’s extreme heat, when the Hingham Middle School air conditioning system was not working, steps are being taken to rectify the situation.
There were reports from parents that some of the classrooms reached temperatures of higher than 90 degrees. There were also reports of odors from the septic system.
Supt. of Schools Katie Roberts provided an update to the Hingham Anchor today:
“The chiller at HMS has a part that is on order and should arrive early next week. A rooftop unit is also down, and consultants are on site actively working on the issue. Although these are not ideal circumstances given the continued heat, we’re on the fast track to restoring cooling in the building.”
In the meantime, teachers on the second and third floor were invited to relocate to the first floor, where it was cooler, on Friday.
“To clarify, air is circulating, just not being cooled,” Roberts said.
As for the septic odor, Roberts reported that the HMS system is serviced on a monthly schedule and that the regularly scheduled pumping day was yesterday (June 5).
