With five games left in the regular season, Hingham boys soccer is approaching every contest like a win-or-go-home state tournament game.

That’s because, essentially, all of them are.

After Saturday’s 1-1 Homecoming draw with Norwell, the Harbormen had a record of 6-5-3 with five games left to play. They are right at the bottom of the Division 2 Power Rankings (#31), but can qualify for bonus games by earning five more points.

Hard fought effort by both teams, including this fight for the ball from senior Callum Owen.

“We are going to give it all we’ve got the rest of the way and treat every game like it’s our last chance. Every opponent is going to get our best,” promised head coach David Leahy. “Scoring goals has been an issue for us all season, so we’ll need to show the maturity to keep the ball out of our net and convert on our chances to score.”

Hingham took the lead early in the second half against Norwell, one of the better Division 3 teams in the state, on a goal by Nolan McManus. A few minutes later, Norwell’s Tyler Kelley netted the equalizer.

“Nolan scored a big goal for us today,” praised Leahy. “Every time he’s on the pitch, it’s constant effort and constant energy from him. He’s a skilled soccer player.”

Junior Kweku Oppong holds off a Norwell defender as he advances the ball up the sideline.

Another constant during the Homecoming game was the shuffling of Harbormen personnel in and out of the game, keeping everyone on the field both fresh and energized.

“We used a lot of guys and every one of them left everything they had on the field. Every single one of them was in it to win it,” said Leahy. “We have a lot of players at about the same skill level. That’s kind of where we are as a team this season. It’s only fair to give everyone a shot to make an impact. We just kind of roll with how things are going and stick with what works.”

The five games left will all provide a challenge to Hingham’s intention of getting to the state tournament. Three games are against teams they lost to earlier in the season, and the two others (Plymouth South, B.C. High) are against teams they have not played yet.

Senior captain Sean Christofferson races to save a ball from going out of bounds late in the contest.

Duxbury (Tuesday) and Plymouth South (Thursday) start the final stretch of the regular season. Division battles against Marshfield (Oct. 27) and Whitman-Hanson (Oct. 29) follow, and the regular season ends on Halloween with a road trip to B.C. High.

The cutoff for the regular season is November 3, and the tournament pairings will be announced on Thursday, Nov. 5.
