On the morning of May 21, 1775, the Hingham Militia witnessed British troops restocking provision, including hay, from Hingham resident and crown loyalist Elijah Leavitt’s pig farm on Grape Island. With the help of the Wareham Militia, the Hingham Militia rowed to Grape Island and forced the British troops from the farm. The militia then set fire to the provision and Leavitt’s barn. Once back on the mainland, they marched to the Leavitt’s house and were greeted by Mrs. Leavitt, who offered them rum and cheese to make amends. It was the start of what called the “War on Provisions,” which greatly impacted the British troops ability to get the necessary supplies needed for the Revolutionary War.
Each year since 2017, the Town of Hingham, with the Hingham Historical Society reenact the battle to commemorate its importance to the war. More than 200 people showed up this afternoon to witness this year’s event.
