July 4 celebration cancelled

May 5, 2020 by Carol Britton Meyer (live update)

During tonight's selectmen's meeting, Police Chief Glenn Olsson announced the cancellation of the parade, road race, and fireworks due to public health concerns.

"I reluctantly make this announcement," Olsson said. "The decision follows numerous meetings among all three committees, the  Hingham police and fire departments and the Hingham Downtown Association. We also thank the board of health/health department for their part in making this decision."

The decision wasn't an easy one, he said, "but it's the right one."

In coming months the committees representing all three events will be collaborating and "organizing a campaign to give back to the community to keep the spirit alive for the 2021 events," Olsson said.

More details to come.

  1. You can ask for 6 feet apart ……
Why is there no celebratory of our nation and our towns have to suffer …..
This is so hurtful to our nationality and our community and our nation

  2. After last year’s cancellation we want the fireworks to be June 26th, Or June 27th or July 2nd or July 3rd, the road race on July
4th and the 4th of July Parade on July 4th all to be on schedule. We enter phase 4 step 1 on March 22nd and if there is a need we can have markers for 6 feet social distancing, have attendees wear face coverings/masks. We need to restore tradition after last year’s cancellation.
