Downtown Hingham offers a wide variety of festive events throughout the year. Christmas in the Square is one of the most cherished events of the year that is organized and presented by the Hingham Downtown Association. This group of business owners works together to create a vibrant downtown and promotes a strong sense of community. What you may not realize is that Christmas in the Square is fully-funded by the Downtown Association. This joyful and beloved holiday tradition brings people of all ages together to kick-off and celebrate the holiday season. For nearly 40 years Christmas in the Square has been part of the magic of Christmas. The streets come alive with the sounds of local musicians playing holiday favorites and children's laughter and excitement at the arrival of Santa. Hingham residents have grown up with the tradition and are continuing it by bringing children of their own.

Christmas in the Square continues to grow and evolve, this year in addition to Miracle on Main Street (the primary fundraiser for Christmas in the Square) Thursday, Dec. 5 (details to come) we will “Light up the Square” and celebrate the second annual Luminaria Festival.  A Luminaria is a Christmas lantern with a votive candle set in a small paper bag weighted with sand and typically placed with others along a sidewalk as a holiday decoration. These festive lanterns will light the way for Christmas in the Square revellers on Friday, December 6.  The bags can be personalized as well (name…in memory of…happy holidays etc). Donations for the purchase of a Luminaria may be made on the Hingham Downtown Association website at https://discoverhingham.com/product/luminaria/ and the proceeds will go towards hosting Christmas in the Square. Add this to your tradition and help Light Up the Square!

Our Downtown will be even brighter and merrier this holiday season. With the help of many generous downtown businesses and individuals we will be decorating all the lampposts downtown. We launched an “Adopt a Lamppost” campaign and we received enough donations to decorate all 80 lampposts downtown running on North Street (Tosca to Talbots). South Street from CVS/South Shore Bank to North Street and Main Street from St. Paul’s to Elm Street. Each adopted lamppost will feature the business or individual name recognizing the sponsor.  In the spirit of being inclusive there will be eight lampposts decorations in observance of Hanukkah. Thank you for the support from the Hingham Light Plant and the Hingham Police Department, they will decorate the lampposts and get our downtown ready for the Christmas in the Square celebration.
