Baking with Deborah Brockney

Sadie Maes-1-3_pp

Deb Brockney is the owner of Sadie Mae’s Cupcake Café and mom to three kids in Hingham. Driven by her love of baking and her desire to create a safe space for people with allergies, she took over Sadie Mae’s three years ago. Not only are her cupcakes delicious (have you tried the carrot cake?! Holy yum!) but they are also 100% nut-free.

Hingham, meet Deb.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I grew up in Marshfield. My husband, Brian + I met at University of Rhode Island. We have been married 16 years this month-we have lived in Hingham nearly13 years and prior to that we lived in San Francisco. We have three kids- Jack is in 6thth grade, Lila is in 3rdd and Estelle just started Kindergarten. We also have a golden retriever, Lucy Marie. This is my 3rd year of owning Sadie Mae’s Cupcake Café.

What inspired you to purchase Sadie Mae's?

There’s a few reasons, I love baking! But also, I my youngest daughter has severe allergies and Sadie Mae’s was where we always went to get treats that were safe for her. As an allergy-mom, I understand the worry about ingredients and worry for your child - at Sadie Mae’s we bake from scratch using whole ingredients in a nut-free kitchen.

Has this type of business always been a dream of yours?

I wanted to own a small business and I’ve always had a passion for baking. I have always loved making yummy treats from scratch, making my own recipes, working with my hands - there is such a wonderful sense accomplishment!

How has social media impacted the way you do your job?

Social media (facebook, Instagram) have positively impacted our presence in the “foodie world” of the south shore, the bridal/event/catering world and even more so, more people are learning that Sadie Mae’s Cupcake Café is 100% nut-free (peanut free & treenut free).

If there is one thing new residents in town could learn about Sadie Maes, what would it be?

Baked from scratch, and nut-free! Wait that’s two things.

What do you love most about Hingham?

The community! As a small business owner, and also a resident of Hingham, not only do I see the community supporting our small business but we are a part of it too. We enjoy walking our kids to school, biking around town to do errands, yard work, coaching, going to out to dinner.

Favorite local spot in Hingham?

North beach

What's one thing people may not know about you?

One of my two original Marshfield high school track records is still unbroken.
