Beyond the Books: What else can I borrow?

As someone who never wanted my kitchen to be overstuffed with gadgets and equipment, I can’t tell you how many recipes I’ve avoided over the years that call for a KitchenAid Stand Mixer. If avoiding the recipe is not an option, I’ve tried improvising hodge-podge solutions to my lack of a KitchenAid with mediocre results. But the next time I run into a recipe calling for a KitchenAid, I know exactly what I’ll do: I’m going to check one out from the Hingham Public Library.

Did you know you can borrow a KitchenAid Mixer and all kinds of other equipment from the Library? I recently discovered that valid Library cardholders can show up, check these items out, and then take them home as they would any of the books in the Library’s collection.

The KitchenAid Mixer is one of many household items that I had not realized would be available for borrowing from our Library. Need a paper shredder, laminator or blood pressure monitor?

Artwork for any of your empty walls? All are available to check out from the Library.

Similarly, what if you need a backup computer when yours is at the shop for repair? The Library has several Chromebooks available for lending.

If there’s a new technology you’d like to try out at home before taking the leap on a purchase, the Library might have it ready for you to borrow. Digital cameras, GoPros and Polaroids are all available for borrowing from the Library.

When it comes to home projects, there’s no excuse to justify procrastination when you can borrow a cordless drill. Have your kids been wanting to go camping? You can borrow a tent, and even a Mophie PowerStation that can charge a phone or laptop up to four times.

Need activities for kids stuck inside during winter weather? How about borrowing a Nintendo Switch? Or a robot with a controller? In addition to all of these items, board games and puzzles are also available.

If you’re in need of a gadget or piece of equipment that you don’t necessarily want to buy, check the Hingham Library website to see the many things you can borrow as a Library cardholder.

In honor of The Hingham Public Library’s 150th anniversary, the Library Trustees will be hosting a celebratory event on the lawn at 5:30 pm on Friday, May 6. More details will be coming soon.
