Way Back Wednesday: Sivert’s Tavern

June 2, 2026 Submitted And Photo By Geri Duff

In the 1893 History of Hingham, Sivret’s Tavern (also known as the Davis – Whiting Tavern) was described as a long house situated as being almost the last building on Main Street before reaching the boundary line West Scituate (now Norwell) and Hingham.

Owner James William Sivret was an 1818 Harvard graduate. A year after graduation he married Abigail Whiting. He was also owner of the Half-Way House (another stage coach stop) around the corner in West Scituate. Together they served the traveling public by providing food and a place to sleep.

This view of the Tavern is from a 1912 postcard and shows the dirt roadway that is Main Street. Today this is the Damon Farm Estates at 1222 Main Street. The post card is from a private collection.
