Garden Club Of Hingham Celebrates Spring With Annual Plant Sale Sunday, May 31

May 11, 2026 Submitted By Garden Club of Hingham

It’s an understatement to say we are all very excited about the grand entrance of spring this year! One way to celebrate is by exploring the Garden Club of Hingham’s (GCH) annual plant sale on Sunday, May 31 at the Hingham Town Common (2 Middle Street) from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

There will be a beautiful and interesting variety of plants for both experienced and novice gardeners to choose from for sunny and shady areas and anything in between. Nearly 2000 plants will be on sale, and they come directly from the gardens of GCH members. Perennials — including a gorgeous selection of Peonies, Shasta Daisies, Bearded Iris, Astilbe, Hosta, Dahlias, a variety of Daylilies, Sedum, Aster, Penstemon (aka beardtongue), Teasel, Mayapple, and Hibiscus — that were lovingly dug up from members’ yards will be potted and ready for planting.  In addition, tree saplings, whips, and shrubs will be available. Another feature of the sale will be the Treasures Table where visitors can find interesting vessels for potting plants or displaying flowers.

“The first 45 minutes after the opening bell rings are the busiest, and experienced shoppers go directly to the plants they are seeking. With that said, there is always an ample variety of plants available until the sale ends,” said Maura Graham, plant sale co-chair. “We are thrilled our community and those who live beyond it are excited to attend each year. They often find something unique they might not have considered, along with gaining a bit of new knowledge about the plant, how to care for it and useful gardening tips from one of our experienced and passionate club members. The plant sale is also a good way for people interested in joining the Garden Club to observe us in action and inquire about membership.”

More than two dozen Garden Club members work at the plant sale, and several others spend weeks and months ahead helping coordinate all logistics, digging, dividing, putting the plants in pots, and transporting them to the sale location.

Proceeds from the plant sale go to a variety of club programs and civic efforts including the annual purchase of a tree that is planted in Hingham on Arbor Day, the design and ongoing care of the Hingham Public Library courtyard and planters, a Junior Gardners program lead by GCH for kids in grades three to five who are interested in horticulture, and Garden Therapy, where members do flower arranging projects several times a year with senior citizens living in local senior care facilities.

The Garden Club of Hingham plant sale will take place rain or shine. For more information, visit http://www.gardenclubofhingham.org/
