Carol Britton Meyer recently connected with Hingham business owner Emma Richardson. You can learn more about Emma – her hidden talent, favorite vacation destination, and what her business offers to the community – below!
* Name of your business: House of Art, 102 North St., downtown Hingham
* Could you share what House of Art is all about: House of Art is a new contemporary art gallery with a focus on introducing global artists to the South Shore. I’ve been a supporter of the arts and a collector my entire life. I come from East London with its thriving contemporary and street art scene. Following the big move across the pond, the entrepreneurial spirit of my new home inspired me to found this gallery and bring some of what I have loved in the London art scene to a new audience.
Firstly, my gallery casts a wide global net for the artists we show, providing a physical space to bring together artists and art lovers from very distant parts of the world. My relationship with my artists is personal, and that personal connection allows me to further connect them with our local art community. Beyond a space to show art, my gallery acts as a space for our creative community – from toddlers to pensioners – to meet and connect. Within Hingham and the South Shore I am just one contributor to a fantastic community of local artists and creatives who champion one another’s work and collaborate on community art events.
* What makes House of Art unique? House of Art is building on a thriving artistic community on the South Shore and adding an additional dimension with its focus on contemporary global art.
* Why you chose downtown Hingham to locate your business: Downtown Hingham is a fantastic thriving hub to access art lovers across the South Shore.
* Have you received positive feedback so far? Any new business is a steep learning curve, but I’m incredibly happy about the interest shown in House of Art in its first few months, and I have been truly humbled by the support the community has given me.
* The favorite part of your business: Working with artists — giving them a space to showcase their work and then connecting them with a new audience – and meeting all the people who come into the gallery and helping them find a new artist, taking their art from my house to their home.

* Do you have any pets? We have a delightful Bernadoodle named Chips. It was the only British name my children could agree on. He’s named after the British classic Fish & Chips. Chips is a beloved member of our family, and you can often find him at House of Art as he doesn’t ever like to be left out if the fun!
* What makes downtown Hingham unique: As a consumer, it has a wonderful variety of locally owned shops that I could lose myself in all day. It reminds me of the “villages” of London, like Hampstead, Highgate or Richmond – sophisticated, eminently walkable, and full of character. As a shop owner, I cannot over-state how incredibly welcoming and supportive the small merchant community has been to me and House of Art.
* What do you enjoy most doing in your spare time? One of the best things about New England is being able to ski in the winter and surf in the summer. These are passions of mine, and it is wonderful to be able to do both with my children.
* Favorite Hingham restaurant and meal: The sandwiches at the Bloomy Rind are my favorite and have kept me going on many a long (but fun) day at the gallery. The Mediterranean is the best!
* Favorite Hingham local spot: You can’t beat taking Chips for a walk around World’s End.
* Favorite vacation destination: Going home to London to see my family and friends and of course immersing myself in the art scene when I’m there.
*Do you have a hidden talent? I used to live in Las Vegas and cover Poker tournaments for British TV. I played a couple of events in the World Series, picked up a few tips, and might class myself as a very unlikely poker shark!
