Many of the homes on Main Street have interesting histories. For example, 480 Main Street, built in 1850 as a home, was the residence and workplace of James Graham where he manufactured rope lines in 1885. While not as large as the old ropewalk on Central Street, Mr. Graham was able to make a comfortable living. You can just make him out standing in the doorway of his barn. This house was also home to Sgt. Harold Cushing, a member of the 2nd Armored Division, who died in Germany and is buried in the Netherlands American Cemetery. The barn to the right in the photo is today’s Main Street Market at 484 Main Street. The photo is from the John Richardson collection Hingham Historical Society.
