When Margo Euler and her husband Franz moved to Linden Ponds, an Erickson Senior Living community in Hingham, Mass., she brought with her a contagious enthusiasm for singing, conducting, and kayaking.
Beautifully blending these passions together, she founded three groups over the years: Broad Cove Chorale, Unicorn Singers, and Aquapella–an ambitious group of singing kayakers.
“I’ve always been passionate about music,” Margo says. “I started a singing group in high school, taught music in the public schools, and even founded children’s choirs when my two daughters were old enough to sing. I love both music and organizing things, so conducting singing groups is a natural fit–I’ve never wanted to do anything else.”
Pursuing her passions
In 1975, Margo founded the Broad Cove Chorale, a women’s ensemble. Three years later, she formed the Unicorn Singers, a mixed ensemble singing classical choral music, close harmony, jazz, and Broadway.
Margo served as each group’s sole conductor, even after moving to Linden Ponds.
Having raised their family in Hingham, the Eulers knew of several friends who moved to Linden Ponds. After conducting their own research, the couple decided to do the same, moving to the community on Thanksgiving in 2014.
“Moving to Linden Ponds offers the best of both worlds,” says Margo. “I’m able to remain active in my outside interests, while also meeting new neighbors and volunteering in the community.”
After years of hard work and dedication, Margo decided to retire from leading the Unicorn Singers in 2022–and now sings with them instead.
And this past April, Margo conducted her final Broad Cove Chorale concert at the performing arts center at Linden Ponds.
“When we moved to Linden Ponds, I started scheduling performances here,” she notes. “Now, there are several chorale members living here, as well as a large and supportive fan base.”
As part of the program, she aired a video she commissioned from a local videographer, documenting the group’s 50-year history. “I guess you could call it my legacy story,” she says.
Singing on the water
When she’s not singing, Margo is most likely on a kayak outing.
In fact, several years ago, while living on the Weir River, this second passion led her to create Aquapella, a group of singing kayakers. Now, the group takes to the water several times each week, meeting at various harbor and pond locations from Hingham and Weymouth to Scituate, Duxbury, and Plymouth.
The group is open to anyone able to launch their own kayak and paddle for 2-plus hours.
“We value curiosity, enthusiasm, love of wildlife, and a sense of adventure,” says Margo. “Singers are especially welcome; we sing whenever we have a quorum, but non-singers are very welcome too. Some of our newer paddlers just prefer to listen.”
Since retiring from conducting the choirs, Margo has more time to devote to Aquapella–especially organizing launch dates and times, photographing outings, and recruiting new members.
“This past season, we went on 163 kayak outings between Easter and Thanksgiving. We even went out on the water December 31 with champagne to toast in the New Year!” she says.
Worry-free living
Above all, Margo credits Linden Ponds’ worry-free lifestyle for her ability to spend time doing what she loves with neighbors and new friends, a few of whom she’s recruited.
“We moved at the perfect time–right before the four blizzards of the winter of 2015,” she notes. “All through that winter, I knew we were where we were supposed to be. We no longer had to climb up on our roof to unfreeze gutters. We said goodbye to all home maintenance. I’m really happy about that–and also thrilled to no longer worry about cooking!”
Margo enjoys organizing songs in the community gardens and leads singalongs for residents of Linden Ponds’ continuing care neighborhoods. She also shares presentations of her photographs and music in the community’s new media room.
Occasionally, she’ll also spend time with her two daughters and their families, who visit from both near and far.
“They both couldn’t be happier that we’re here; it gives them peace of mind,” she says. “It’s a wonderful place for us to spend time together. Moving to Linden Ponds was absolutely the right decision for us.”
