Way Back Wednesday: Shopping in Hingham Square

July 2, 2025 Geri Duff

When Michael Shilhan proposed a project documenting Hingham through historical photographs, he was given access to many different collections of photos from both private and public sources. He did not realize that when he captured the charm of early Hingham, he also showed that while the physical changes, the people haven’t. Window shopping along North Street in 1915 is as enjoyable today as it was back then. The buildings that housed Carrington Real Estate, Magner Footwear, Bickford Hardware and the train station have been replaced or renovated over time. The store on the far right is gone and that space is the parking lot for Talbots. Mr. Shilhan borrowed this photo for his book “When I think of Hingham” from the Hingham Historical Society and the book still available in their gift shop.
