At one time Hingham had five Post Offices: Hingham, South Hingham, Hingham Centre, West Hingham and the Naval Ammunition Depot. In the early years the post office was often in the home or business of the appointed postmaster. Quincy Lane was the first South Hingham Postmaster and kept it in his store on Main Street. Later Postmaster Hersey moved it further north near his home, Postmaster French kept it near Main and French Streets, Postmaster Cushing kept it in his home and Postmaster Josiah Lane moved to his store which was the original location. The back of this photo is states that this is Ella J. Cushing, daughter of Edward K. and Mary J. Cushing and that she was appointed Postmaster in 1907 and most likely this building, J.W. Cushing’s store was on Main Street between French and High Streets. The photo is from the Hingham Historical Society.
