Way Back Wednesday: Genevieve Crosby

May 28, 2025 by Geri Duff

The majority of the early photographs of Hingham were taken by men. As cameras became smaller and film could be sent out to be developed, women took up the hobby. Miss. Genevieve Crosby worked as a clerk in the town accountant’s office and loved taking photographs. She picked up the hobby from her parents Alanson and Charlotte Crosby who took many snapshots of her. Shown here on North Street before it was paved you can see the delight on her face as she prepares a shot. She donated a series of family photos of the interior and exterior of her home at 197 North Street, and the surrounding neighborhood that are now in the collection of the Hingham Historical Society and provide a small window into life in Hingham in the 1920s
