In the 1940s, Hingham built three brick fire stations. The older wooden stations were used by the town for a number of years and then sold off.
James Gordon bought the 1842 Extinguisher firehouse and moved it from the Harbor area to the Sons of Italy. It almost didn’t make it because, in May 1952, at the start of the move, a fire broke out at 1 a.m. Quick work by the firefighters saved the building.
To help visualize the location, the gas station on the left, now a bank, can be seen in the photo. The cars parked on the right are in front of Ye Olde Mill Grille, now the Liberty Grille.
