Thomas S. Kennedy Jr.

February 9, 2023

Thomas S. Kennedy Jr. of Hingham, formerly of Sarasota FL, and Wolfeboro, NH, passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2023.  He was 87.

Tom was born to Eleanora (Daniels) and Thomas Kennedy, raised in Jamaica Plain and enjoyed wonderful summers in Hull, MA.  He attended the Boston Latin School and then went on to earn his bachelor’s degree at UMASS Amherst.  After school he worked in public accounting for a few years and then earned an accounting position with the Boston Gas Company (now known as National Grid).  He had a distinguished 29-year career there and was very proud to be able to retire early at 57.  He often joked that he was “on the dole” for longer than he was employed.

Following retirement, Tom, also known affectionately as “Big T” by many, split his time between his summer home in Wolfeboro, NH and his winter home in Sarasota, FL.  He enjoyed walking the beach, kayaking and cherished the time he spent with family and friends.  In his later years, Tom moved back home and was warmly welcomed by the community he found with the Residence at Penniman Hill in Hingham.  His infectious sense of humor, kind heart and wealth of positivity made him fast friends with the fellow residents and the staff.  His many costumes including Santa Claus, Father Time, St. Patrick, and even Baby New Year will be fondly remembered for many years to come.  During his down time, as any true numbers man would, Tom loved to watch the Stock Market, often watching the ticker like it was a television program and even watching his 401K on an hourly basis.

Dedicated husband to Barbara (Cashman) Kennedy. Devoted father of Darlene Grove and her husband Phil Grove of Franklin, Donna Hall and her husband Jonathan of Plymouth, Brenda Davies and her husband Tom of Amherst and Thomas S. Kennedy III and his wife Paula of Hingham.  Cherished grandfather of 11 and great-grandfather of 2.  Loving uncle of Ann “Nancy” Hassett of Waldoboro, ME.  Also survived by many friends.  Predeceased by his sister Ann Miller.

During the last year of his life, Tom was an inspiration to all around him, managing his health challenges with incredible grace, wit, and endless positivity.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Friday, March 10, from 9:30-10:30 AM in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM. Following the visitation, the Funeral Mass will be held in St. Paul’s Church, Hingham at 11 AM. Burial will be held privately, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Tom’s name may be made to the Thomas Kennedy Jr Memorial Fund, Hingham Institution for Savings, 55 Main Street, Hingham, MA 02043.
