South Shore Conservatory (SSC), the largest community school for the arts in Massachusetts, announces the appointment of Dr. Steve Bass as Artistic Director, and the promotion of Cynthia Krebs Lee to Chief Operating Officer (COO), effective immediately. These leadership appointments follow an intentional reorganization designed to align with national best practices for nonprofit arts institutions.

The restructuring transitions SSC from a traditional single-president model to a collaborative co-leadership model, placing artistic and operational leadership in distinct, complementary roles. This shift was led by SSC’s Board of Trustees to ensure long-term sustainability, greater cross-functional coordination, and a renewed focus on artistic innovation.

“As part of our ongoing commitment to mission, accountability, and growth, the Board took deliberate action to restructure SSC’s leadership,” said Kathy Battistoni Skillman, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “This dual-leadership model reflects a widely respected best practice across successful nonprofit arts organizations. We are excited to move forward with two exceptional leaders at the helm.”

Dr. Steve Bass, SSC’s new Artistic Director, is a composer, conductor, and pianist whose career spans concert halls, jazz clubs, theaters, and educational institutions. He is co-founder and bandleader of A Swingin’ Affair, a 16-piece big band, and has served as Music Director for numerous regional productions across Greater Boston. A graduate of Boston College (M.A.) and New England Conservatory (M.M. and D.M.A. in Jazz Studies), Steve brings not only deep musical expertise but also a track record of building creative teams and mentoring young artists.

“South Shore Conservatory is a remarkable place with a vibrant community and a legacy of artistic excellence,” said Bass. “I’m honored to join the team and to help shape the next chapter through dynamic programming, faculty collaboration, and a shared vision of creativity and community impact.”

In her new role as COO, Krebs Lee will continue to lead fundraising and communications while taking on operational oversight and cross-departmental planning. Her appointment acknowledges both her proven leadership and her critical role in SSC’s success during recent transitions.

“Cynthia brings unmatched insight and dedication to SSC,” said Skillman. “She is deeply respected by colleagues and community partners alike, and we’re thrilled to see her step into this expanded role.”

This new model allows each leader to focus on their area of strength while working in close partnership to ensure alignment and innovation across SSC’s programs and initiatives.
