Christmas in the Square and other Holiday Happenings In Downtown Hingham!

November 22, 2022 by Mona Pohl for the Hingham Downtown Association

Month-Long Holly Jolly Hingham Starts 11/26 and Christmas In The Square is 12/2

The holidays seemed to have arrived faster than expected, but there is no reason to fret. In fact, it’s the perfect time to write lists and make plans. The Hingham Downtown Association (HDA), in conjunction with Small Business Saturday, will kick off the month-long Holly Jolly Hingham on November 26 and it will run each Saturday until Christmas. Of special note, the beloved Christmas in the Square will take place on Friday, December 2 from 5:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. It will launch with the inaugural Talbots Tree Lighting. Talbots is the presenting sponsor of Christmas in the Square as they celebrate their 75th anniversary in downtown Hingham this year. Cheers to 75 years!

Talbots Presenting Sponsor for Christmas in the Square

Starting the week after Thanksgiving, visiting Downtown for shopping, dining, personal services or general business will put everyone in a festive mood. The decorated store windows will beckon all gift givers and the lampposts along the streets will be adorned with bows and lights, courtesy of generous sponsors. It will also be even more convenient to accomplish everything for the holidays with stores staying open until 7:00 p.m. on Thursdays and the addition of hours on Sundays.

Thank you to all the volunteers, sponsors and the HLP for the beautifully decorated lampposts

The charming backdrop of beautiful, historical Downtown makes meandering from shop to shop in search of special gifts a celebratory experience in itself. Each store offers highly curated selections of unique items ranging from tasteful, stylish women’s, men’s and children’s clothing and accessories, the perfect home accents, inspiring artwork, indulgent personal products and services, and always something a host will adore.

In addition to wonderful shopping, there will be weeks of holiday fun for children throughout town including Holly Jolly character cutouts for photographs or just for laughs, horse drawn hayrides and the special North Pole express mailbox outside La Petite Maison. Letters are delivered directly to Santa, so make sure to provide a legible name and return address because Santa has been known to write back!

Santa will arrive on South Street in Downtown for Christmas in the Square around 6:30ish. He will forgo his sleigh for a fire truck and give his reindeer a rest and be escorted by a police car.

There is something for everyone to enjoy at Christmas in the Square. It will feature holiday music and dancing, The Women’s Club Festival of Trees Gala display at the Community Center, an amazing ice sculpture demonstration, and the showing of the classic film, “It’s a Wonderful Life”, projected on the tunnel cap.

The festivities at Christmas in the Square will be even merrier this year with the addition of a musical performance by Peter Mundt, guitarist, vocalist and teacher at the South Shore Conservatory.  The choir students from the St. Paul School and Su Escuela, and dance students from the Community Center will also fill Downtown with the joyousness of the season.

“Christmas in the Square is the perfect opportunity to enjoy the warm welcomes from shop owners and mingle with the community,” said Lynn Barclay, executive director of the Hingham Downtown Association. “The HDA members, performers, sponsors and community put so much heart and hard work into Holly Jolly Hingham and Christmas in the Square, and every year the sights, sounds and looks on everyone’s faces are the inspiration to do it all over again.”
