Robert Beal Jr. Recognized As Hingham’s Veteran Of The Year

June 16, 2026 Submitted By The Hingham Veterans Council & Veterans’ Services Office

The Hingham Veterans Council and Veterans’ Services Office proudly recognize Robert “Bob” Beal Jr. as the recipient of the prestigious Hank Maude “Service Above Self” Veteran of the Year Award. He and all veterans will be honored in this year’s Fourth of July parade.

Beal is a United States Air Force Vietnam veteran – serving from 1969-1972 – a lifetime member of VFW Post 6053, and a member of the American Legion.

Presented annually on Veterans Day, the award honors a Hingham veteran whose volunteer service has made a significant and lasting impact on the community while demonstrating exceptional character, leadership, and dedication to serving others.

Each year, the Veterans’ Services Office accepts nominations from friends, family members, and peers for veterans who embody the values represented by the award. Nominations are reviewed by the Veterans Council, which carefully considers each candidate’s contributions and commitment to the community.

This year, the Council found the nominations submitted on behalf of Bob Beal particularly compelling. The heartfelt testimonials highlighted a lifetime of selfless service, leadership, and unwavering commitment to helping others. After reviewing the nominations, the Council unanimously agreed that Beal exemplified the spirit and purpose of the Hank Maude “Service Above Self” Award.

Beal was the driving force behind the establishment of the POW/MIA tribute on the town wharf at Hingham Harbor and directed and participated in laying flags on veterans’ graves for Memorial Day.

During the award presentation, attendees experienced a memorable and moving tribute. Rather than a traditional introduction, a letter written by Beal’s son, who was deployed with the United States Coast Guard and unable to attend the ceremony, was read aloud. The letter described the many ways Beal has served his family, fellow veterans, and the Hingham community, offering a deeply personal account of the qualities that make him so deserving of this recognition.

Beal earned a number of ribbons and medals during his service, including the Presidential Unit Citation, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, National Defense Service Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal.

The Veterans Council congratulates Robert “Bob” Beal Jr. on this well-deserved honor and thanks him for his continued dedication to serving others and strengthening the Hingham community through his example of service above self.

On a lighter note, Beal has been volunteering as Hingham’s Santa during the annual Christmas in the Square celebration for 50 years this year. He will not accept compensation personally, but requests that any monies supporting his appearance be donated to Hingham’s Veterans in Need fund.

As Santa, Beal has made special trips to the homes of critically ill children who cannot physically make it downtown, and he and his family also support the town’s Memorial Day program, underwriting funds for the family ice cream treats.
