An Open Letter from Hingham Elected Officials & Community Leaders
Here in Hingham, we are fortunate to live in a community where people care deeply about their town, their neighbors and the direction of our country. We may not always agree on every issue, but we share a belief that public service should still mean something — and that the people we send to Washington should remember who they work for.
That is why we are enthusiastically supporting Congressman Stephen Lynch in the upcoming primary and would ask that you join us.
For years, Stephen Lynch has been a familiar presence in Hingham and across the South Shore. He doesn’t just come around at election time. He shows up at our town meetings, he listens, he works with our local delegation and stays connected to the communities he represents.
And he brings something to Congress that is increasingly rare: the perspective of someone who actually knows what it means to work for a living.
Before he ever held elected office, Stephen was an ironworker for 18 years. He worked alongside men and women trying to earn a decent living and provide for their families. He later worked his way through college and Boston College Law School, became a labor attorney and earned a Master’s Degree at Harvard, but he never forgot those roots. He’s as comfortable walking a picket line with the nurses and he is taking on a billionaire in a Congressional hearing. That matters to us.
At a time when families in Hingham and throughout the South Shore are feeling the pressure of higher housing costs, grocery bills, health care expenses and college tuition, we want a
representative who understands that even families who have worked hard and planned carefully can feel squeezed.
We also want someone with the experience and independence to stand up for our communities.
When Hingham has called, Congressman Lynch has been there for us. Even while serving in the minority party in Congress, he fought for and secured millions of dollars to help our town, bringing back $1.7 million for our new Public Safety Facility – home to Hingham Police Headquarters & the Fire Department North Station, $2 million for the Inner Harbor Resiliency Project to help protect us from storm surge, $7.26 million in ARPA funding, and he stood alongside us to force FEMA to change unfair flood maps that would have cost Hingham homeowners tens of millions of dollars. He co-sponsored a workshop for local officials to help them navigate and apply for federal grant programs. In the most recent appropriations cycle alone, Stephen secured over $15 million for community service projects across our district – funding secured through skill and relationships built over decades, not through the advantages of majority power.
Results like these don’t happen by accident. They happen because Hingham has someone in the room fighting for our priorities.
One of the more meaningful examples of Stephen’s relationship with Hingham may be his commitment to our young people.
As our Congressman, Stephen has had the honor of nominating exceptional young men and women to our nation’s service academies – including the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, and the United States Military Academy at West Point. Over the years, Congressman Lynch has nominated more young people from Hingham than any other community in his district.
That is an extraordinary source of pride for Hingham and a reflection of both the caliber of Hingham’s young people and Congressman Lynch’s longstanding commitment to recognize and encourage their desire to serve our country.
We don’t expect our congressman to agree with every one of us on every single issue. We do expect him to listen, use common sense, put the interests of his district ahead of political theater and be willing to work with others to get something accomplished.
Stephen Lynch has done that. There are plenty of people in Washington who are good at getting attention. We prefer someone who is good at getting results. For us, this election comes down to trust.
We know Congressman Lynch. We know his record. We know where he comes from, and we know that after all these years, he hasn’t forgotten it.
Hingham and the South Shore have a strong, experienced and independent voice in Stephen Lynch. We believe that’s worth keeping.
That’s why we’re voting to send him back to Congress.
