Sally Whiton Strout Sheldon passed peacefully on May 25, 2025 surrounded by her family. Sally was born on March 29, 1943 at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, MA to Eleanor Whiton Strout and Walter Thompson Strout, of Hingham, MA.
Sally was raised and schooled in Hingham from Center School through her graduation from Hingham High School in 1965. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in English from The University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1965 and followed with her Masters of Special Education from Lesley College in 1992.
She taught English in Fairfield, CT after college and later Special Education at Dover-Sherborn Middle School in Dover, MA. She loved teaching and was well-respected by students and staff.
She married Laurence D. (LD) Sheldon, of Gouverneur, NY, on December 27, 1966. LD entered the Marine Corp a few months after and she became a Marine wife, working in Boston while he spent 1968 in Viet Nam. Her daughter Laurie was born shortly after their service ended and Sally devoted her time to motherhood. Daughter Marty Lynn was born four years later. When they were older, she returned to teaching. Sally was the most compassionate, caring, loving, funny, determined and devoted mother to her two girls and provided them with endless advice, guidance and love throughout their lives.
Sally lived in New York and Pennsylvania as LD advanced in his profession as a bank trust officer before they returned to Massachusetts in 1980 to settle in Medfield. After 40 years spent in Medfield, Sally and LD retired to the Oak Point community in Middleboro, MA where they spent the last chapter of their lives together. At Oak Point, they found a true community where they were able to rekindle their love of interests and activities such as gardening, art, bowling and gathering with friends.
Sally was an accomplished gardener, avid reader, talented artist and enjoyed walking on any beach, but particularly those in Maine.
Sally is survived by her soulmate, LD Sheldon and her daughters Laurie Elizabeth Sheldon of Norton, MA, Marty Lynn De Loreto and her husband, George De Loreto and their children, Bradley Jackson De Loreto and Cadence Elizabeth De Loreto, all of Framingham. Sally is also survived by her sister, Nancy Edith McCarthy and her husband, Timothy McCarthy of Warwick, RI as well as by her niece and nephew and their children.
A funeral will be held at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel 21 Pond Street Hingham, MA on June 5, 2025, at 11am, followed by a private family luncheon.
