Maine Earthquake Shakes South Shore

January 27, 2025 By Meteorologist Michael PageĀ

A magnitude 3.8 earthquake occurred just off the coast of York, Maine Monday morning, and was widely felt across the South Shore.

The earthquake was about 8 miles underground, sending waves of energy towards Massachusetts.

The shaking took place around 10:22 AM, with many in Boston, Hingham, Cohasset, Norwell, and in other nearby communities reporting a rattle.

In some cases neighbors heard objects in cabinets shaking, indicating the earthquake was felt here.

A little less than one year ago a magnitude 4.8 earthquake occured in New Jersey, and was also widely felt across Greater Boston.

Back in 2020 a magnitude 4.0 centered on the South Coast was also felt in Hingham.

Small earthquakes occur with some regularity in New England, though many are not felt and damage is rare.
