The bells of Hingham’s Memorial Bell Tower have long been a familiar part of the community, but have you ever wondered what it would be like to be the one ringing them?
Starting Saturday, September 12, community members will have the opportunity to learn the traditional English art of change ringing, a centuries-old practice that turns a tower full of bells into a carefully coordinated musical performance.
Change ringing is about much more than simply pulling a rope and ringing a bell. Participants work together to ring a set of tuned tower bells in precise, constantly changing patterns. The sequences are based on mathematical permutations, requiring concentration, timing and teamwork from everyone involved.
The tradition has deep roots in England, where change ringing has been practiced for centuries, often from church bell towers. Now, Hingham residents can experience this unique tradition right in their own community at the Memorial Bell Tower.
Lessons will take place Saturday mornings from 9–10 a.m., beginning September 12. No previous experience is necessary, making the lessons a chance for anyone curious to try something new.
Space is limited. Those interested in participating can email Paul Wasson at pauljwasson@gmail.com for more information or to sign up.
