Joseph C. Roper

Joseph C. "Skip" Roper, 80, of East Weymouth, formerly of Hingham, died peacefully surrounded by family on June 18, 2023. A 1961 graduate of Hingham High School, Bridgewater State University in 1968, and holder of a master's degree in counseling from the University of Bridgeport in 1970. He was a guidance counselor and a coach in the Marshfield and Hingham school systems until his retirement. Skip later sold golf and athletic equipment throughout New England.

He is survived by his wife, Jan Bickford, daughter Jan Henderson and her husband, Erin, son Marc Roper and his wife, Tracey, daughter Aisha Bickford-Perez and her wife, Christine; six grandchildren, Connor, Kyle, Kevin, Kaitlyn, Emerson, and Kendall. He was pre-deceased by his first wife, Holly Roper. He leaves two brothers, Chris, and Dave, from Marblehead, Massachusetts.

At Bridgewater, Skip earned letters in track and football, was selected as an All-East lineman, and was president of the Men's Athletic Association. After college, he played semi-pro football for several area teams, including the Whitman Townies, Quincy Steelers, Middleboro Cobras, and New Bedford Sweepers. His many hobbies included boating, golf, travel, and loyally following the activities of his children and grandchildren.

Skip was a past member of the Hingham Yacht Club and Rotary Club of Hingham and served on the Harbor Development Committee and Bear Cove Park Committee. He served on the Board of Overseers of the South Shore Conservatory in Hingham.

There are no visiting hours, and services are private.
