Hingham High Robotics To Compete On The World Stage

April 20, 2026 Submitted By Hingham High Robotics

Congratulations to the Hingham High Robotics Team 5000, The Hammerheads, who qualified for the FIRST World Championship tournament for the first time in team history. The team will head to Houston TX on April 29th for a four day tournament featuring 600 international teams.

During the competition season, students design, program, and build industrial-sized robots to play an action-packed game. For this year’s challenge, students designed a robot to engage in the Rebuilt game in which robots launched a stream of balls into a collection hub and climbed a high tower to earn bonus points.  During each match, HHS students would engage with students from other New England teams to form alliances, fostering a spirit of cooperation and advancing appreciation for STEM.

This past weekend, the team participated in the New England Districts event at the Big E Expo in Springfield and, given their strong showing, the team now ranks 8th in New England and 60th out of more than 3,600 teams world-wide.  Throughout the 2026 competition season, the team has garnered numerous awards, including the Industrial Design award at the University of Rhode Island tournament, Excellence in Engineering award at the Worcester PolytechE-nic Institute tournament, and the team most recently won the Autonomous Engineering award at the New England District championships.

The team received partial grant funding from the FIRST Robotics organization to fund the team’s trip to the world tournament in Houston, and the team is engaging in additional fundraising to support their participation in the event.
