Last Saturday, Hingham Boys Crew traveled to Lake Quinsigamond, in Shrewsbury, MA for a series of races against some very tough and talented local racing teams. Crews from St. John’s, St. John’s Shrewsbury, Exeter, Andover, and Tabor gave the Hingham Boys a great opportunity to test their considerable skills as they faced off on the 1,500 meter course. With cross-tail winds ranging from 5-10 mph and scattered rain throughout the event, the boys acquitted themselves admirably as they powered down the course. The Hingham boys will be facing many of these boats in two weeks at NEIRAs, so these races served as an excellent benchmark for the boys as they seek to contend with some of the strongest private school rowing teams in the region. Coach David Deluliis was proud of the boys’ efforts, “Saturday’s races brought tough competition that tested us and offered valuable lessons.”
On Sunday, a sunny, pristine, Mother’s Day morning, there were few places more picturesque than the Charles River in Boston. While the Hingham Crew team was supposed to be racing two hours north in Hooksett, NH, dangerously high flood waters forced the Hingham coaching staff to scramble and salvage what could have been a lost weekend – and salvage it they did. Instead of packing it in and declaring it a missed opportunity, Program Director Pat Houle pulled some strings and the coaching and logistics teams from HIngham and Boston Latin made a little Mother’s Day magic for the rowers from Hingham. With a slight tailwind and moderate current, temperatures hovering in the low to mid 60s, conditions were about perfect for the races along the 1,300 meter course.
The first race was between the Hingham girls third varsity, with coxswain Ginger Neihoff, stroke Stella Gutierrez, Anne Sargent, Jane Betti, Dania Thayer, Taylor Sargent, Ellie White, Lydia D’Arcy, and bow Eme Bias, and fourth varsity, with stroke Shauna Arseneau, stroke Veronica Webb, Haley Kost, Rose Lovendale, Megan Buckley, Elsie Olin, Eva O’Sullivan, Anne Kyriss, and bow Abrielle Beaudoin, against Boston Latin’s third varsity boat. Both Hingham boats, comprising one of the deepest and most talented rosters in the region, grabbed an early lead and never looked back. The third varsity managed to pull ahead of the fourth varsity by a small margin, while opening more a 30-second gap on Boston Latin. The strong finishes were yet another definitive statement from two boats who have spent all season looking faster every week.
The next race featured Hingham’s fourth varsity boys, who took on a novice crew from Boston Latin. The Hingham boat, with coxswain Myles Figueroa, stroke Brendan Conroy, Huck Shaughnessy, Luca Arienti, Ryan Potter, Hmood Al-Quthami, Xavier Bogen, Sam Whitrap, and bow Euan Chesney-Douglas, looked strong and fast as they pulled out to a huge lead. The boys kept their foot pressed firmly on the gas throughout the race as they cruised to an easy win by more than 30 seconds. The boys have continued to demonstrate improved form and fitness as they gear up for States in a couple of weeks.
Next up, the boys first varsity, with coxswain Lucas Mangili, stroke Hanley Stroka, Nate Bradl, Sam Ackerman, Lachlan Knies, Slater Fairfield, Oliver McLucas, Will Barry, and bow Nicholas Mangili, were able to turn an early lead into a terrific win. The boys, who were coming off of a strong race on Saturday, showed fitness and poise as they simply overpowered a very skilled Boston Latin boat. The head to head result bodes well for the upcoming clash in two weeks against their public school rivals in the state championship.
In the next race, the girls first varsity, with coxswain Emily Gu, stroke Sophia Santarelli, Thea Migliaccio, Maeve Schnorr, Eliza Powers, Louisa Orth, Natalie Shaw, Ava Sugrue, and bow Lynnayah Ryan, found themselves in a tough race against a strong Boston Latin boat. With a quick start, the Boston Latin boat was able to hold a slight lead throughout the middle of the race, as the Hingham girls tried to claw back into the lead. At the finish, the Boston Latin girls were able to hit the line just five seconds ahead of Hingham.
Hingham’s second varsity girls, with coxswain Maddie Owens, stroke Maddy Kittinger, Bianca Kiley, Emme Beaudoin, Izzy Wagner, June Rogan, Aubrey Fairfield, Coco Prohm, and bow Peyton Burke, found themselves locked in an incredibly tight race. By the halfway point, the Hingham girls managed to gain a small lead, which they then held as they passed under the last bridge, before racing for the finish. The girls finished very strong as they hit the line exactly three seconds before their opponents, securing another big win in a season full of them.
The boys second varsity, with coxswain Brent Strauss, stroke Owen Cerrato, Landy Vittorini, Brendan Engel, Hector Munoz, Spencer Farish, Zakary Robbins, Gerard Bottini, and bow Liam Connolly, and Hingham’s third varsity, with coxswain Jordan Brown, stroke Jack O’Leary, Seph Darlington, Will Whitrap, Martin Seggev, Aedan Sullivan, Ben Hansmire, Liam Govoni, and bow Ryan Potter, engaged in a tight duel with Boston Latin’s second varsity. The three boats jockeyed for position on the river, as Hingham’s 2V and Boston Latin’s 2V raced for the finish line. In the end, Boston Latin’s familiarity with the racecourse may have played a decisive role, as they managed to hit the line just over a second before the Hingham boys. It was a terrific race between three very skilled crews. Coach Dave Deluliis is excited about the progress the boys are making, “On Sunday, we came back stronger—our first varsity secured a win, and the fourth boat added another victory. The second boat closed the gap on Boston Latin, while the third boat rose to the challenge of racing against second varsity crews. Every stroke marked progress in what has been a tremendous season so far.”
The next race featured Hingham’s fifth and sixth varsity girls against Boston Latin’s novice boat. The fifth varsity, with coxswain Ashley Sinkus, stroke Neve Brown, Violet Tysdal, Abby Zimmerman, Celia McCarthy, Shelby Stroka, Ava Kelly, Lena Angel, and bow Paige Moore, and the sixth varsity, with coxswain Lexi Messina, stroke Fiona Galvin, Leonie Eigenmann, Rose Lovendale, Charlotte LeClair, Anna Rubel, Aliyah Blidner, Aubrey Lambert, and bow Sasha Darmon, represent a fantastic reserve of young rowing talent. Both boats got off the starting line quickly, building a strong lead that they would not relinquish. Ultimately, the fifth varsity boat was able to establish a significant lead, hitting the line several boat lengths ahead of their teammates. Meanwhile, the sixth boat put in a tremendous effort as they easily beat the Boston Latin boat by 10 seconds.
In all, it was a tremendous day for Hingham Crew, all made possible by the tenacious efforts of the coaching staff, who scrambled to make sure that the rowers all had a chance to experience racing at one of the best venues in the entire sport. Next week, assuming the high waters and possible rain in the forecast cooperate, Hingham crew heads up to beautiful Hanover, NH to take on crews from Hanover and Tabor, before closing out the season the following weekend at NEIRAs and MPSRA Spring Championships.
