For over 10 years, Hingham Farmers Market has provided a way to implement the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) but due to the federal shutdown, SNAP benefits will not be issued on time for the November 1 market. In normal times, recipients of the benefit visit the Friends tent with their Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card and through the Totilpay application provided by the government, families and individuals can process their benefit to then use them at the food product vendors at the market. And thanks to the regular sponsorship of the Fruit Center Marketplace and Hingham Institution for Savings, that transaction is matched up to $20. For example, if a person requests $20 off their card, they then receive $40. This benefit will discontinue. However the Healthy Incentives Program (HIP) will continue.
The HIP program connected to SNAP provides money back on the EBT card when you use SNAP to buy fresh, local fruits and vegetables at participating farmers markets, farm stands, and CSAs. Hingham Farmers Market has one certified vendor for this program – Aeonian Farms. If people keep $1 on their card, these benefits will continue.
Hingham Farmers Market has supported the Hingham Food Pantry with the consistent generosity of the vendors at the end of each market. Various produce and or other remaining products are donated and then delivered to the Fruit Center, where the food pantry collects the donations to provide to the Hingham Food Pantry on their designated open pantry dates.. The program has worked due to the cooperation of all our partners and volunteers. With your help, let’s make it even more robust. As a market-goer, you can purchase fresh food to donate to the food pantry. Let’s increase the HFM donations to the Hingham Food Pantry. Drop off your donation at the Friends tent at the entrance to the market on Station Street.
Located at the back of Second Parish Church, 685 Main Street, Hingham, the Hingham Food Pantry will be ready for an increase in need on Tuesday, November 4. Hingham Farmers Market appreciates the support of all market-goers throughout the season. HFM continues to operate at 95 Station Street, Nov 1, 8, 15 and 22. The winter market is located at Wompatuck Visitor Center 204 Union Street, every Saturday from January 3 to March 28, 2026. Support for the Hingham Food Pantry will continue at all these markets.
