Two proclamations — one to commemorate Earth Day and the other to celebrate Arbor Day — were issued by the Select Board this week.

Earth day is Saturday, April 22, and Arbor Day, Friday, April 28.

The Earth Day proclamation acknowledges that as members of the global community, Hingham citizens “must step forward and take action to create positive environmental changes that will support the management and care of our environment.”

In recognition of today’s environmental challenges, trees will be planted as a symbol of the town’s commitment “to the good stewardship of all that is entrusted to our care.”

Arbor Day was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska, and this special day is now observed throughout the nation and the world.

Hingham has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation for a number of years and intends to continue its “tree-planting ways,” the proclamation states.

In recognition of Arbor Day, the Select Board encourages all citizens to support efforts to protect trees and woodlands, support the town’s forestry program, and plant trees “to gladden the hearts and promote the well-being of present and future generations.”
