Memorial Day to Labor Day is known as the “100 Deadliest Days of Summer,” when blood donations decline by 20 percent.
At the same time, the summer months bring an increase in severe injuries caused by car crashes, ATV accidents, sports injuries, and boating accidents, among others, according to Hingham personal trainer Dianne Kane.
Kane and Matt Spaulding, owner of Absolutely Fit, 55 Water St. in downtown Hingham, are hosting a blood drive at that location Saturday, July 25, for Boston Children’s Hospital during this time of critical need. The hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Kane worked at Absolutely Fit for 24 years.
“A single donation can save up to four kids’ lives,” Kane said. “The blood collected will help cancer, sickle cell anemia, trauma, and other patients. The children at BCH need this life-saving blood.”
After being diagnosed with leukemia, Kane — a personal trainer in Hingham for 33 years and a former longtime blood donor — is no longer able to give blood. This is her third time hosting a blood drive at Absolutely Fit.
‘Hosting a drive is my way of continuing to help the kids at Boston Children’s Hospital,” she said. “Most people who haven’t donated blood yet haven’t done so simply because they have never been asked. We’re asking the Hingham community to consider donating blood on July 25.”
