Grace Price Platt

July 1, 2024

Grace Price Platt, of Hingham, died peacefully on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at The Residence at Penniman Hill in Hingham. She was 97. Grace was born in Perkasie, Pennsylvania on July 15, 1926 and was the daughter of the late Clarence and Vira Price.

She met her first husband Oscar Martinez, a member of the US Navy, at a dinner her family hosted at their house as part of a program for local servicemen. They were soon dating and Oscar often wrote Grace and her family during his missions overseas during World War II and after they were married, during his service on submarines in the Cold War.

Oscar was assigned to the US Naval Mission to Cuba so Grace and their two children, Ronald and Corinne, moved to Havana to join him. In 1953, Oscar passed away from a service-related illness. Grace was only twenty-seven years old and moved back to Connecticut to raise her two young children alone. She handled it with incredible strength and courage and made sure they had the best life they could while keeping the memory of their father close to their hearts. She did eventually remarry and had a son, Craig Platt. She lived independently until moving to Hingham, Massachusetts to live with her son Ronald and his family in 2022.

Grace loved animals of all kinds – especially the many dogs and cats she and her children had over the years. She also spent much time in her garden making sure the birds that visited her yard were well-fed and the butterfly bushes and many other plants were always well-tended to. She loved walking on the beach at Napatree Point in Watch Hill, Rhode Island. She also had an antique business for several years with her friend June Williams and loved to travel New England to seek out antiques.

Grace had many close friends over the years and loved spending time with them and was a loyal friend whenever any of them was in need. She also loved spending time with her family who have countless, wonderful memories of the time spent with her over the years.

She spent the last year of her life at the Residence at Penniman Hill in Hingham where she made new friends including the loving food service staff and caregivers.

Grace was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Milton Price, and is survived by her son Ronald Martinez, daughter-in-law Margot Scheuren and grandson Evan Martinez of Hingham, MA, daughter Corinne Martinez of Apache Junction, AZ and son Craig Platt of North Stonington, CT.

Following cremation, Grace will be interred privately in Connecticut.

  1. Ronald, this is Bob Kendall whose father is Robert P. Kendall. He was also a member of the Cochino crew. I met you and your family in New London in the early 50s before being transferred down to Norfolk. My father died in 2016 and is buried in Suffolk, VA. I retired in Winston-Salem, NC. If you ever get in the area maybe we could meet again after about 70 years. Email: rkendall@triadl.rr.com Phone: 336-287-9864.
