Ensign JT Jermyn Graduates “Cum Laude” From the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command

Ensign JT Jermyn, USN of Hingham has graduated “With Distinction” from the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command, Goose Creek, SC during the rigorous 26week course of instruction, called Phase I.

NNPTC’s mission is to prepare safe and trusted Naval nuclear operators ready for follow on prototype training and, ultimately, service in the Fleet.

Students are trained in the science and engineering fundamental to the design, operation and maintenance of naval nuclear propulsion plants.

The naval nuclear program is widely acknowledged as having the most demanding academic program in the U.S. military.

Academics proceed at a rapid pace with high academic standards enforced in all subjects.

Students typically spend 40-45 hours per week in the classroom with an additional 10 to 35 hours per week of study outside of lecture hours.

  • Nuclear physics
  • Health physics
  • Reactor principles
  • Material science and metallurgy
  • Electrical power theory and generating equipment
  • Thermodynamics
  • ChemistryNuclear reactor technology

Ensign Jermyn will now begin Phase II at the Nuclear Power Training Unit (NPTU), often referred to as Prototype, also based in Charleston, SC.

During the next 26-weeks, the students will expand their class room knowledge with hands-on-training, utilizing the Navy’s two operating prototype reactors.
