Artisans is the Square (63 South St., Hingham) is pleased to announce their newest member, Mary Gilmartin, as Artist of the Month for September. She will be working in the shop on the 3rd, 17th and 24th if you’d like to meet her and see her beautiful paintings. We are open daily from 10-5 (781-749-2590).
Mary is an award-winning local artist whose preferred medium is oil. She resides on the South Shore of Massachusetts with her husband and four girls. Being mainly self-taught, she has dabbled in art her entire life. The first painting she sold was a homework assignment from an art class she took while attending Bridgewater State College as an Earth Science major.
Her love and appreciation of nature and wildlife shines through her work. Most of her paintings consist of local scenes, pet portraits, and wildlife. She spends a lot of her time in her home studio painting but does get out whenever she can to paint plein air.
Her work has been displayed several times at the Peabody Essex Museum for the Massachusetts Duck Stamp Contest. Winning and honorable mention in its final year before going digital in 2012. She has done solo shows at the Massachusetts State House, Linden Ponds, The Frame Center, and the John Curtis Library in Hanover. Her work has won numerous awards in Juried and National shows across the South Shore and Cape Cod. She was chosen for the “People’s Choice” award at both the Pembroke Arts Festival and at the National Show at the Cape Cod Art Center in Barnstable.
