In recognition of Hingham’s reputation as a community committed to excellence in education and the awareness that a quality education “is one of the significant foundations for the continuing success of our state, our country, and society at large,” the Select Board has proclaimed Sunday, April 2, as “Education and Sharing Day” and issued a proclamation.

The purpose of this special day in Hingham is to recognize the important contributions of its teachers, paraprofessionals, school administrators, and staff “in assuring high-quality education for our children.”

Beginning with President Jimmy Carter, and continuing every year thereafter, a federal proclamation has been issued declaring “Education and Sharing Day, U.S.A.”

In 2021 during the pandemic, President Joe Biden issued a proclamation on Education and Sharing Day, stating that “if the isolation and loss of the last year has taught us anything, it is just how much we need each other, how intertwined our lives are, and how deeply we crave conversation, connection, and community. We are at our best when we work together and help our neighbors, whether down the road or around the world.”

April 2, 2023 also marks what would have been the 121st birthday of Rabbi Menachem Schneerson, a leader who was devoted to educating people worldwide and who had a profound respect for diversity, inclusiveness, and equal justice. Education and Sharing Day also celebrates his works.
