Following last week's vehicle crash into the Derby Street Apple store, Apple CEO, Tim Cook, traveled from California to the South Shore this holiday weekend to visit Apple employees and shoppers who were injured while at the store on Monday morning.

The Anchor spoke with the President and CEO of South Shore Health, Dr. Allen Smith who shared his gratitude for the visit.

“We are grateful that Tim Cook and Deirdre O’Brien from Apple were able to come to South Shore Hospital on Friday to visit with some of the patients who were injured during last week’s tragedy at the Apple Store in Hingham,” shared Smith.

Cook and his team were also able to meet some of the clinical staff who cared for patients after the crash.

Smith followed up by sharing, “we are also so appreciative of the wonderful care our entire team has provided to these patients, from our EMS at the scene of the accident right through to the emergency room, the trauma and critical care teams and all the doctors, nurses and colleagues who have provided care and support in the hospital and at home with our VNA team.

The driver of the SUV that plowed into the Apple store at Derby Street Shops Monday morning -- killing one man and injuring many others -- has been charged with reckless homicide by motor vehicle, according to a Tuesday morning tweet by Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz following an extensive investigation by the Massachusetts State Police and the Hingham Police.  The Hingham Fire Department also responded to the accident.

Bradley Rein, 53, a former Natick resident now living in Hingham, was arrested Monday night and arraigned in Hingham District Court Tuesday morning after the 2019 Toyota 4Runner he was driving went through the Apple store plate glass storefront window at about 10:45 a.m. on Monday. He pleaded not guilty to one count each of Reckless Homicide by a Motor Vehicle and Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle. Rein is next scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 22, 2022.

After a week of such tragedy, Cook's visit was a bright spot for patients and hospital staff who so greatly deserved it.

Smith continued, "the genuine caring and kindness shown by Tim and his team on this visit did so much to lift the spirits of the patients and our colleagues.”
