The Town of Hingham invites residents and visitors to gather on Wednesday, July 8, for a public reading of the Declaration of Independence as part of Hingham Celebrates America’s 250th. The event will take place on the grounds of Hingham’s Memorial Bell Tower next to the Old Ship Meetinghouse, 90 Main Street.

The evening begins at 5:30 p.m. with the ringing of the Memorial Bell Tower, followed by th
e formal program at 6:00 p.m. As part of a synchronized celebration taking place in communities across the nation, Hingham will join Americans in reading the Declaration of Independence aloud, honoring the words that launched the nation’s pursuit of liberty.
Community leaders representing a broad cross-section of Hingham will serve as readers, each taking part in this shared civic tradition.

Adding to the evening’s festivities, Hingham native and renowned “Singing Football Player,” Nic Capodilupo, a McGill University opera student, will perform patriotic selections and lead the community in song.
Residents are encouraged to embrace the spirit of 1776 by walking to historic downtown Hingham with friends, family, and neighbors.
Following the program, all are invited to a community reception at the Hingham Community Center, 70 South Street. Refreshments will be generously provided by the Hingham Community Center and the Fruit Center Marketplace.
To accommodate those with accessibility needs, drop-off will be available through the Hingham Cemetery entrance behind the Memorial Bell Tower. Limited accessible parking is also available. Those requiring parking assistance should contact Art Robert, Assistant Town Administrator, at 781-741-1541.
